Man with neck pain after a car collision, evaluated by Dr. Brian Donovan at Nuro Chiropractic in Brooklyn

Explaining auto accident care to a patient is made simple at Nuro Chiropractic in Brooklyn. The first thing to do is to discover the impact of the accident to your body. Next is to support your journey getting back to the exact form prior to the accident. I am Dr. Brian Donovan.

Waking up with a stiff neck can be troublesome, but getting into a car accident is on a different level. There are multiple structures involved. Symptoms typically evolve days after the accident, making you feel pain other than in the injured area.

Expect Pain Not Only On Injured Areas

For example, a person comes in, putting all of the emphasis on upper back or shoulder pain. My shoulder pain is unbearable from the accident. That is the initial reaction, especially if that is where the impact happened.

I do not put all my focus on the pain location. Examination of every element is important. There are instances wherein symptoms like severe restrictions on cervical motion are mistaken for just an isolated shoulder injury, but in fact it is a cervical nerve irritation. This is why cervical range of motion, the shoulder, neurological function, strength, and sensation are examined while keeping in mind the collision’s mechanism.

You might be deceived by just looking at the symptoms right after the accident. As the adrenaline kicks in, symptoms are hidden temporarily. Symptoms such as stiffness, headaches, neck pain, or radiating pain may come up hours or days after the accident.

How Evaluation is Done After a Collision in Brooklyn

  • 1 Jot down a detailed account of the accident. How the accident happened, where the vehicle was hit, along with its driver or passenger. Are you using a seatbelt, your exact position in the car, symptoms that you felt immediately, and the symptoms that you are just beginning to feel.
  • 2 A full examination of the orthopedic, neurological, and musculoskeletal systems, which includes range of motion, strength, sensation, reflexes when necessary, movement, and overall condition.
  • 3 If it is clinically needed to get an X-ray, there is a digital X-ray available in the office. However, if more advanced imaging is necessary, a referral will be given to check if you have a disc injury, nerve involvement, or another soft-tissue injury.
  • 4 Create documentation starting from the initial visit and up to the last. It includes mechanism, symptoms, objective findings, diagnosis, treatment, and progress.

“Auto accident care here is not simply, you were in a car accident, so let us adjust your neck and back three times a week.”

How the Approach Becomes Different as You Recover

The First Few Visits

You come in on your first visit stiff and conscious of your movements, that’s expected and normal. Evaluation and checking what the body can tolerate safely. Light treatments are done like gentle manual or chiropractic techniques, light mobility work, and other therapies that target pain and movement restoration. Aggressive adjustments are not given to speed things up especially if someone is in a severely acute state.

After Three or Four Weeks

Changes may occur at this point in time. Restoration of strength, mobility, and physical capabilities are the primary goals. The pace will increase, particularly with manual treatment, mobility work, and active rehabilitation, adding decompression, Class IV laser, PEMF, or cryotherapy only when there is sufficient clinical reason.

Comparing Your Progress When You Started

If you are able to rotate your neck more than the usual forty degrees then that is a good achievement already. Also, if you can already resist sitting for at least twenty minutes without hurting your back, it also tells you that you are getting better. Check if you can already see a blind spot; then you are one step closer on your functional improvement journey. Eventually, pain score will drop as the treatment progresses.

When a Medical Intervention is needed

Emergency medical intervention is needed when there is significant trauma, loss of consciousness, severe or rapidly worsening headache, confusion, difficulty speaking or walking, new significant weakness or numbness, chest or abdominal pain, difficulty breathing, or uncontrolled bleeding after the accident. This is not the primary stop if you have any of those symptoms.

If a person fits conservative intervention, whiplash-associated neck pain, cervical and lumbar sprain and strain injuries, back pain, muscle and soft-tissue injuries, joint dysfunction, restricted mobility, and certain accident-related extremity complaints are the ones we usually manage.

It does not mean that you must be in extreme pain to deserve an evaluation. Some people are saying they got a mild sore, then suddenly they cannot turn their neck the way they used to and have new headaches. It is much better to get evaluated as early as possible to avoid the worsening of symptoms, making them difficult to manage in the long run.

Auto Accident Care FAQs

What are the payment terms?

Many people did not expect that the treatment is covered through New York’s No-Fault system and it does not matter who is at fault, subject to the applicable rules and coverage. We will help in administering and insurance verification so that you’ll not be left with no idea of the process.

Will the pain increase because of the treatment?

It is normal to be concerned with regard to pain management, often heard on the first visit. I am not the type to implement an aggressive treatment. The stage of the injury and tolerance must match the treatment at all times. The treatment on your first few visits is not definitely the same as the one you have at week four.

How long is the waiting time before I must get evaluated?

Waiting is not an option, you must get checked as soon as possible. Delaying for weeks or even days can worsen mobility, sleep, and compromise your daily activities. By getting evaluated early, every important detail will be recorded which can help in building an efficient treatment plan.

Are X-rays mandatory after a car accident?

Not really. It does not automatically mean that you’ll need imaging after a car accident. A digital X-ray is available here in the office if necessary. If a soft tissue or nerve structures need to be examined a referral for an MRI will be given to you.

What treatments will I undergo?

Treatments vary depending on your condition. The injury and your recovery phase are the primary factors to check. Treatment may include gentle chiropractic treatment, manual therapy, stretching and mobility work, therapeutic exercise, and rehabilitation, with technology added. I will be the one to build and implement a treatment plan that works for you.

First is Diagnosis, Next is Treatment

You have to tell what took place in the accident, feeling, and what you have not been capable of doing after the accident. I am here to examine you, treat the injuries, decide on what approach to take or if you need further evaluation, and create a plan that will help you get back to your old self before the accident.
