Targeted Cryotherapy in Brooklyn, NY

We use the America Cryo Sub-Zero system at Nuro Chiropractic in Brooklyn, which delivers high-pressure CO2 for rapid, localized cooling of a specific area. I am Dr. Brian Donovan, and the word that matters here is targeted.

Unlike whole-body cryotherapy, or simply putting an ice pack over a large region and waiting, this lets us direct the cooling precisely and control the application throughout the session.

What a Session Looks Like

After determining that cryotherapy is appropriate, we use a handheld applicator to deliver controlled CO2 cooling over the targeted area, moving continuously and monitoring the area as we go. Sessions are typically only several minutes, because the system lowers superficial tissue temperature rapidly.

Patients typically experience an intense cold sensation. It should not feel painfully cold or intolerable, and we monitor throughout rather than applying the device and walking away. Immediately afterward the skin feels cold and may temporarily look pink or red as the area returns toward normal temperature.

Where I Use Cryotherapy in Brooklyn

We primarily use it as an adjunct for short-term pain management and recovery in appropriate musculoskeletal conditions:

Depending on the diagnosis we may combine it with rehabilitation, chiropractic care, SoftWave therapy, or laser therapy.

Who Should Skip It

We avoid it or use extra caution in patients with significant cold hypersensitivity or cold-related disorders, impaired circulation, impaired sensation that prevents someone accurately detecting excessive cold, and certain vascular and neurological conditions.

Significant trauma, suspected fracture, infection, unexplained severe swelling, or progressive neurological symptoms should not simply be cooled. Those need the underlying cause determined first.

Relief Is Not the Same as Healing

“Cryotherapy can help change how you feel today. Our larger treatment plan is designed around addressing why you are hurting and helping you function better over time.”

Dr. Brian Donovan, D.C.

Cooling can temporarily change pain perception and symptoms, and some patients find movement noticeably easier afterward. That does not mean an injury has healed. Recovery still depends on the underlying condition and the rehabilitation that goes with it.

Why That Distinction Matters

Feeling temporarily better after cooling should not be used as proof that an injured tissue is ready for unrestricted activity. That is how people go back too early and end up back where they started, which is why the cryotherapy sits inside an individualized plan rather than standing in as the answer for every injury.

Cryotherapy FAQs

How is this different from putting ice on it?

Traditional ice provides slower, less targeted cooling over a longer period. The America Cryo system uses high-pressure CO2 to produce rapid, localized cooling that we can precisely direct and monitor during a short session.

Does targeted cryotherapy hurt?

Most patients tolerate it very well. It feels intensely cold, but we continuously monitor the area and can modify or stop treatment if it becomes uncomfortable. Intense is not the same as intolerable.

How long will the relief last?

That varies. Some patients get temporary symptom relief following treatment. Cryotherapy is not intended to permanently eliminate the underlying cause of a painful condition, so how long it lasts depends largely on what is actually driving the pain.

Can I exercise afterward?

The cryotherapy itself generally does not require downtime, but whether you should return to exercise depends on the injury we are treating rather than on the cooling. I will give you guidance specific to your case.

How many treatments do I need?

There is no universal number. It may be used occasionally for symptom management or built into a broader plan depending on the diagnosis, severity, your activity level, and how you respond to treatment.

A Tool for Comfort, Inside a Real Plan

Targeted cryotherapy can help manage pain and soreness and make movement or rehabilitation more comfortable. What it does not do is diagnose or correct the reason the area became painful. Our new patient offer covers the consultation, examination, X-rays if needed, and treatment across two visits.
