PEMF Therapy Brooklyn, NY
- Pulsed Electromagnetic Fields
- No Needles or Injections
- Used Alongside Rehab
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy, or PEMF, is a non-invasive treatment that exposes an area of the body to pulsed electromagnetic fields. I am Dr. Brian Donovan, and at Nuro Chiropractic in Brooklyn we use it as an adjunct rather than as a headline treatment.
Research suggests PEMF can influence cellular signaling and biological processes involved in pain and tissue function. The strength of that evidence varies considerably depending on the condition being treated, which is worth saying plainly.
What a PEMF Session Looks Like
Once we have determined PEMF is appropriate for your condition, you are comfortably positioned while the applicator is placed over or around the area being treated. The device then delivers pulsed electromagnetic fields according to the selected settings.
There is no injection, no incision, and no electrical current being delivered through electrodes into the body. Most patients find it very comfortable, and depending on the system and settings you may feel very little or nothing at all.
You do not need to feel PEMF for it to be delivered, and feeling something does not prove a treatment is working. Not sensing anything during a session does not mean the device is not operating.
Where PEMF Fits at Our Brooklyn Office
Here it is primarily an adjunct to a larger musculoskeletal treatment or rehabilitation plan, particularly when we are trying to manage pain and improve function. Depending on the case we may incorporate it for:
- Osteoarthritis and joint-related pain
- Certain neck and lower-back pain
- Musculoskeletal pain and stiffness
- Certain sports and overuse injuries
- Recovery from soft-tissue injuries
- Joint pain in the knee, shoulder or hip
PEMF has also been used medically in specific applications such as certain bone-healing devices. Those are specialized indications and should not be confused with every general-purpose PEMF treatment being sold as the same thing.
Who Should Skip It
PEMF may not be appropriate for patients with certain implanted electronic devices, such as some pacemakers or neurostimulators, because electromagnetic fields may interfere with their operation. Pregnancy and certain other medical situations may warrant avoiding treatment or getting medical clearance first, depending on the device and treatment area.
Significant trauma, suspected fracture, progressive neurological loss, infection, or unexplained severe pain all need proper evaluation. We do not use PEMF to delay a diagnostic workup or a referral that somebody actually needs.
“PEMF is not something I use because electromagnetic therapy is good for everything. We establish the diagnosis first, determine whether PEMF has a reasonable role for that particular condition, and use it as one component of care.”
Dr. Brian Donovan, D.C.What to Expect Afterward
- Generally no downtime, so most patients return to normal daily activities immediately.
- Some report reduced discomfort or stiffness and easier movement. Others notice changes more gradually across multiple sessions.
- Some patients do not respond significantly at all, and I would rather say that up front than pretend otherwise.
I do not expect every patient to feel a dramatic immediate change. We evaluate whether PEMF is earning its place by looking at changes in symptoms and function over time, and we stop using it if it is not contributing.
PEMF FAQs
Will I feel anything during PEMF?
Often very little. PEMF does not need to create a strong physical sensation for the treatment to be delivered. That surprises people who expect to feel a machine working, but sensation is not the measure here.
What does PEMF actually do?
It exposes tissues to time-varying electromagnetic fields that can interact with biological processes and cellular signaling. There is research supporting certain medical and musculoskeletal applications, though the evidence varies by condition. I do not describe it as something that recharges every cell or heals everything.
Is PEMF safe?
It is generally well tolerated when appropriately used, but it is not appropriate for everyone. Certain implanted electronic devices such as some pacemakers or neurostimulators may be a contraindication, since electromagnetic fields could interfere with them. Pregnancy and some medical situations require additional precautions or clearance.
How many PEMF treatments will I need?
There is no universal protocol for every condition. Frequency and duration depend on why we are using it, the severity and duration of the problem, and how you respond. That last part is what decides whether we continue.
Is PEMF the entire treatment?
Usually not. Depending on the diagnosis, the plan might also involve chiropractic care, mobility work, strengthening, rehabilitation, SoftWave therapy, or laser therapy. PEMF supports a plan rather than being one.
Used When There Is a Reason, Not Because We Own It
We use PEMF when there is a reasonable clinical indication, then monitor whether you are actually improving rather than continuing it because the technology is in the building. Our new patient offer covers the consultation, examination, X-rays if needed, and treatment across two visits.
